간략한 일정

이번 여행 일정은 이렇다.

뉴델리 -> 사르나트 -> 바라나시 -> 아그라 -> 자이푸르 -> 뉴델리

오늘은 사르나트로 이동하는 날이다.

이번 여행을 계획하면서 나는 유네스코 문화유산을 많이 참고했다.

하지만 문화유산 목록에 등재된 모든 곳을 가보려면 한달을 다녀도 부족할 것이다.

결국 선택과 단순화가 필요했다.

모든 곳을 가보는 것은 시간적으로도 금전적으로도 무리였다.

그렇다면 반드시 가야 할 곳을 추린 후에 가지치기를 하면 된다.

그렇게 하다보니 자연스럽게 북인도 중심의 루트가 완성됐다.

인도는 워낙 국토가 넓어서 이동하는데 상당한 시간이 소요되었다.

북부를 여행하고 중부나 남부까지 내려가기엔 나에게 주어진 시간이 너무 짧았다.

그래서 북부만 둘러보기로 결정했고, 인도의 핵심적인 면모를 보기엔 그것으로 충분한 것 같다.

더 다니는 것은 욕심이고, 내 체력이 따라주지 않을 것이라고 판단했다.

각 도시를 선택한 이유는 이것들이다.

뉴델리: 인도의 근현대사를 품은 수도이자, 쿠툽 미나르와 후마윤 묘 같은 문화유산이 공존하는 곳

사르나트: 석가모니가 실제로 처음 설법을 전한 곳으로, 불교의 4대 성지 중 하나

바라나시: 갠지스강을 볼 수 있는 힌두교의 성지

아그라: 인도의 랜드마크인 타지마할이 있는, 무굴제국 시기의 수도

자이푸르: ‘핑크 시티’로 불리는 도시이자 암베르 포트를 품은 라자스탄주의 주도

아침 풍경

오늘은 6시 50분에 기상했다.

여행에서 가장 어려운 것 중 하나는 이른 기상이다.

기상 때만큼은 놀러와서 출근하는 느낌이랄까.

샤워를 마치고 나갈 준비를 하니 어느새 7시30분.

루프탑에서 내려다본 마을은 여전히 스모그에 찌들었지만, 그래도 아침의 특유의 상쾌함이 조금 느껴졌다.

루프탑에서 보니 꼬맹이들이 학교로 향하는게 보였다.

초딩때부터 부지런히 학교가는 건 세계 어디나 다 비슷한 모양이다.

숙소를 나오니 학교가는 아이들이 더 많이 보였는데, 순수함이 묻어나와서 귀엽고 정감갔다.

우버를 기다리며 마을 풍경을 찍어보았다.

벽이 없거나 창문이 없는 집들이 인상적이었다.

처음에는 미완성 상태로 둔 건가 싶었다.

그런데 꼭 그런 것만은 아니고, 애초에 그렇게 의도적으로 저렇게 지어진 건물도 많은 듯했다.

우버는 부르자마자 3분만에 도착했다.

가는데 얼마나 경적을 빵빵거리는지 알아보기 위해 10초짜리 동영상을 찍어보았다.

초에 한번 울리겠거니 했는데, 여러군데에서 울리니 체감상 초당 4-5번은 울려졌을 것이다.

바라나시로

30분정도 달려서 8시 30분에 뉴델리 공항에 도착했다.

결제를 하려는데 앱에 카드 등록을 못 해서, 또 현금으로 계산해야만 했다.

내게는 20루피짜리 지폐 두 장과 100루피짜리 네 장이 있었는데, 요금은 313루피였다. 결국 320루피를 낼 수밖에 없었다.

기사가 거스름돈을 줄지 지켜봤지만, 또 어물쩡거리며 지갑에 잔돈이 없는 척하고 힌두어만 계속 쏟아냈다.

7루피가 한국 돈으로 얼마 되지 않는다는 걸 알고 있었고, 시간도 아까워 그냥 팁으로 넘겨버렸다.

트래블월렛 카드를 우버에 등록해야 하는데, 우버가 카드 등록을 자꾸 막는다.

공항 직원들은 전부 군복 차림이었다.

짐 검사부터 게이트까지 가는데 20분도 채 걸리지 않았던 것 같다.

먼저 마실 물부터 찾아다니다가 코스타커피에서 물과 커피를 샀다.

인도에서는 사서 마시는 물조차 조심해야 한다.

청결하지 않은 물을 사용했을 가능성이 있기 때문이다.

안전한 물만 골라 마셔야 한다는 점이 꽤 피곤하다.

전날에는 물을 사는 걸 깜빡해서 아예 한 모금도 못 마신 채 잠들었다.

준비해둔 말라리아 약도 물이 없어 못 먹었는데, 드디어 먹을 수 있었다.

기회를 봐서 깨끗한 곳에서 볼일도 봤다.

인도의 화장실은 의외로 꽤 깨끗한 편이었다.

청소하는 사람들이 계속해서 사람들이 나가기를 주시하고 있다가, 거의 1분마다 한 번씩 들어와 닦았다.

이렇게까지 열심히 청소하는 이유가 뭘까 싶을 정도였다.

공항이라는 특수한 시설이라서 그런 걸 수도 있다.

적어도 공항에서는 무조건 화장실을 들러야 한다고 생각했다.

비행기까지는 버스를 타고 이동해야 했다.

버스에서 내리자 어떤 젊은 인도 남성이 어디서 왔냐고 말을 걸었고, “나이스 투 밋 유”라며 인사를 건넸다.

인도에는 이렇게 유쾌하고 친화력 좋은 사람들도 정말 많다.

한국인은 거의 보이지 않았고, 여태 본 동양인은 일본인들이 대부분이었다.

내가 탄 비행기 안에도 혼자 여행 온 듯한 왜소한 일본 남성이 있었고, 친구끼리 온 일본 여성들도 두 팀이나 보였다.

바라나시 공항까지는 원래 1시간 정도 걸릴 예정이었다.

11시에 이륙해 12시에 도착하는 일정이었는데, 12시에 출발하는 바람에 도착도 한 시간 늦어지게 됐다.

샤워용품을 담아둔 작은 가방에서는 샴푸가 터져 있었다.

좌석에 비치된 구토봉투 지퍼백으로 가방을 감싸 큰 가방에 넣어두긴 했지만, 언제 새어나올지 모르는 시한폭탄 같았다.

그날은 슬리핑버스를 타야 해서 샤워도, 빨래도 못하는 일정이었기에 가방 전체가 샴푸로 젖어버리면 말그대로 X되는 상황이었다.

이 날 가장 걱정되던 건 12Go에서 예약한 버스를 제대로 탈 수 있느냐는 점이었다.

이 플랫폼을 통해 예약한 버스들은 탑승 애매하거나, 위치가 자주 바뀌고, 연락도 잘 안 되고, 연착도 잦다는 후기를 많이 봤기 때문이다.

거의 지독한 혹평 수준이었지만 선택지가 없어서 이곳에서 예약할 수 밖에 없었다.

바라나시에 도착해 비행기에서 내리자마자 긴팔을 벗고 긴바지도 반바지로 갈아입었다.

터져서 새어나온 샤워용품 파우치를 닦아내고, 기내에서 챙겨온 지퍼백에 새어 나온 용품들을 따로 분리해 담았다.

1시쯤 공항 밖으로 나오자마자 우버를 잡을 수 있었다.

그런데 공항 주차비를 걷는다며 기사가 50루피를 달라고 했다.

자기는 돈이 없다며 계속 내게 부담시키려 했지만, 나는 현금이 없다고 버텼다. 실제로 50루피짜리 지폐가 없기도 했다.

우버비로 내가 줄 돈이 650불이 예정되어있는데, 어차피 이 인간이 50루피 때문에 650루피를 포기하지 않을 것이라는 것을 알았다.

결국 자기가 알아서 주차비 걷는 인간이랑 쇼부보고 나왔다.

아마 이런식으로 둘이 짜고 쳐서 관광객들 등쳐먹는 짓을 수십번 했을 듯하다.

구걸하는 아이

택시가 정차해 있을 때부터 눈이 똘망한, 일곱 살쯤 되어 보이는 남자아이가 나를 애처롭게 바라보고 있었다.

차에서 내리자 그 아이는 내 팔을 툭툭 치며 손을 내밀고 곧바로 구걸하기 시작했다.

슬픈 표정을 짓다가도 금세 해맑게 웃었고, 계속 내 곁을 따라다녔다.

입장권은 QR로 결제해야 했는데 인터넷이 잘 터지지 않았다.

어찌어찌 결제창까지 넘어갔지만 결국 결제 실패가 떴다.

온라인 결제는 270루피 정도였고, 현장 현금 구매는 300루피였다.

귀찮아서 그냥 300루피를 내고 현장 구매를 해버렸다.

유적지 입구로 들어서자 그제야 아이는 떨어져 나갔다.

눈을 마주치고 웃고 장난을 쳐도 떨어지지 않던 아이가, 유적지 안으로는 더 따라오지 못하자 결국 포기한 것이다.

대략 10분에서 15분 정도는 계속 붙어 있었던 것 같다.

구걸하는 아이에게 쉽게 돈을 줘버리면, 그 아이는 앞으로도 구걸에 기대어 살아가게 될지 모른다.

관광객의 동정심에 기대어 생계를 이어가는 구조가 아무리 어린아이에게도 좋은 방식일 수는 없다고 생각했다.

안 되는 일은 안 되는 일이다.

녹야원 입장

유적군에 들어서자마자 가이드가 필요하냐며 한 사람이 따라붙었다.

나는 괜찮다고, 고맙다고 정중히 사양했다.

그러자 그는 오히려 “노 프라블럼”이라며 예의 있게 물러났다.

이렇게 정중한 가이드들도 있다.

아소카 석주

조금 더 안으로 들어가자 큰 나무 아래에 승려 두 명이 앉아 있었고, 흰 사제복 같은 옷을 입은 인도인 여러명이 그 앞에서 가르침을 받고 있었다.

더 안쪽으로 가니 한국 국기를 든 중년 여행객들도 보였다.

한국 여행객들은 여기서 처음 봤다.

지금 보이는 이 그림은 아소카 석주이다.

이것은 기원전 3세기, 아소카 대제가 세운 석주이다.

인도 전역에 약 30개 이상 세워졌으며, 불교 확산과 통치 이념을 알리기 위한 목적이었다.

사르나트의 석주는 특히 중요한데, 그 이유는 석가모니가 첫 설법을 한 장소이기 때문이다.

원래 석주 꼭대기에는 사자 4마리 조각(사르나트 사자상)이 있엇다.

이 사자상은 현재 인도 국장(국가 상징)으로 사용되고 있다.

여기서 마우리아 제국과 아소카 대왕에 대해 조금 더 정보를 펼쳐야겠다.

마우리아 제국은 기원전 322년경 찬드라굽타 마우리아가 건국한 제국이다.

건국할 당시에 북인도에는 동쪽에 난다 제국이 패자로 버티고 있었다.

그리고 서쪽에는 그 유명한 알렉산드로스 3세(알렉산더 대왕)의 마케도니아 군대가 정복활동을 하고 있었다.

오랜 정복 원정으로 알렉산더는 돌아가고 찬드라굽다는 난다 제국을 파괴하고 인도를 통일한다.

인도 역사에서 최초로 인도를 통일한 제국으로, 중국 역사에서 중국을 최초로 통일한 진나라와 비슷하다고 보면 된다.

그 마우리아 제국에서도 최전성기를 다스린 왕이 아소카 대제이다.

아소카 대제는 찬드라굽타의 손자로 마우리아 제국의 3대 왕이다.

그는 잔인하기로 유명했다.

왕위 계승 다툼에서 친동생을 제외한 이복동생을 99명 죽이고, 그들을 따르던 신하와 궁녀까지 모두 죽였다는 설이 있다.

그리고 자신이 왕위에 오르는데 도움을 준 이들마저도 충성심을 시험한다며 수백명 죽였다고 한다.

한번은 자신이 좋아하는 나무의 꽃을 딴 여인에게 500대의 채찍형을 가했다고 한다.

또 ‘아소카의 지옥’ 이라는 고문용 궁전을 만들어 포로들을 고문하기도 했다.

그런 아소카가 바뀐 계기는 재위 8년, 칼링가 왕국 침공 때이다.

이 전쟁에서 10만명이 죽고, 15만명이 포로가 되었다고 한다.

전투 후에 참상은 피가 발목까지 들어서고, 아이들이 고아가 되거나 미쳐버렸다고 한다.

그는 그제서야 충격을 받고, 죄책감으로 인해 불교로 개종한다.

참 빨리도 참회했다, 진즉에 그러지 말지…

하여튼 그가 불교로 개종한 이후 한 일들은 긍정적인 일들이다.

전쟁을 그만두고 공공사업을 후원하고, 병원, 고아원, 양로원을 세워 사람들을 치료하고 돌보게 했다고 한다.

그리고 동물 보호 정책, 동물 살해 제한, 동물을 위한 의료까지 제공했다고 한다.

불탑을 세우고 승려들을 이웃 나라에 보내 선교를 시키기도 했다.

불교 뿐만이 아니라 다른 종교에도 포용적이었다.

워낙 역사가 깊은 곳이라서 그런지,나무들도 세월을 함께 먹은 듯 큼직하고 울창했다.

다메크 스투파

유적군은 워낙 오래된 만큼 무너져내리고 터만 남은 곳이 많아서, 한눈에 보기엔 조금 허전하다는 느낌도 들었다.

결국 이곳의 하이라이트는 다메크 스투파였다.

생각보다 훨씬 거대했고, 실제로 마주하니 제법 웅장했다.

가까이서 보니 확실히 볼 만했고, 묵직한 존재감이 있었다.

뒤편에는 그늘이 드리워져 있어, 그곳에 모여 쉬거나 구경하는 사람들이 적지 않았다.

다만, 부처가 가르침을 설했다는 실제 장소라는 점을 생각하면, 내가 기대했던 종류의 영험함이나 분위기는 다소 부족하게 느껴졌다.

그렇다고 해서 실망한 것은 아니다.

애초에 그런 감정을 꼭 기대하고 온 것은 아니었고, 그런 기준을 내려놓고 보면 충분히 괜찮은 장소였다.

요가 체험? 명상 체험?

한편으로는 여러 색의 옷을 입은 외국인들이 모여 명상을 배우고 있었고, 혼자 조용히 명상하는 사람들도 눈에 띄었다.

하지만 사방에 스모그가 자욱해, 기대했던 낭만적인 분위기는 솔직히 크지 않았다.

저들은 아마 바라나시에 며칠 머무르며 이런 프로그램까지 경험하는 여행자들일 것이다.

여기까지 와서 저런 체험을 해보는 것도 나쁘지 않아 보였다.

확실히 기억에 남을만한 특별한 경험이 될 것 같다.

다른 이야기지만 이곳을 둘러보며 느낀 점이 있다.

이렇게 세계적으로 중요한 유적지를 두고도, 인도는 관리 부족으로 그 가치를 충분히 살리지 못하고 있다는 생각이 들었다.

낭만이라는 것도 결국 현재의 관리와 보존이 뒷받침되어야 유지된다.

바빌론이나 아시리아처럼 인류사에 남을 유적들 중에는, 극단주의 무장단체에 의해 파괴되어 사라진 것들도 있다.

설령 위험을 감수하고 그 장소에 간다고 해도, 사람들이 상상하던 감정과 분위기를 그대로 느낄 수 있을지는 의문이다.

실제 장소에 가보는 것은 책이나 인터넷으로 배우는 것과 분명 다르다.

과거의 숨결을 느끼고, 시간이 흐르며 무엇이 어떻게 변했는지를 직접 보는 경험은 오래 남는다.

그래서 그런 장소들이 관리 부족이나 현실적 문제로 그 매력을 잃어가는 모습을 보면 더 아쉽다.

역사를 좋아하고, 직접 체험하는 여행을 좋아하는 입장에서는 더욱 그렇다.

안타깝지만...

아까 구걸하던 아이는 양반이었다.

이번에 구걸하러 온 애는, 자는지, 죽었는지 분간이 안 되는 어린아이를 안고 있길래 깜짝 놀랐다.

안겨있는 아이를 본 순간 온몸에 소름이 돋았다.

과격한 표현이지만 정말로 애가 죽은 것만 같았다.

코에 손을 대보니 그건 아니었다.

정말 많이 놀랐다.

사실 인도에 오기 전에 미리 구걸하는 아이들에 대해 글을 보고 검색해보기도 했다.

많은 아이들이 학교에도 가지 않고 구걸하며 생활한다고 한다.

그게 당장 더 많은 돈을 벌게 해주기 때문이다.

가족들이 그렇게 하라며 길거리로 들이미는 경우도 실제로 있다.

그래서 NGO 같은 구호단체가 손을 내밀어도 아이들은 학교에 가지 않고 구걸을 한다고 한다.

가족뿐만이 아니라, 불량배들이 시켜서 구걸을 하는 경우가 많고, 번 돈은 대부분 불량배들이 수금해간다는 말도 있었다.

무엇이 어디까지 사실인지 알 수 없어도, 돈을 그대로 주는 것은 악습의 고리를 끊기는 커녕, 더 단단하게 만드는 것이라고 생각한다.

순간의 동정심으로 간단히 풀릴 문제가 아니었다.

충격이 크고 마음이 약해져서 쉽사리 발을 떼기 쉽지 않지만, 고개를 돌리고 그대로 앞으로 걸어가버렸다.

영불탑이라는 곳도 있는데 안으로 들어가보지는 않고 밖에서만 구경했다.

바라나시 거리

영불탑에서 탄 택시는 좀처럼 앞으로 나아가지 못했다.

목적지는 판치강가 가트였지만, 갈수록 차량이 몰려 길이 완전히 막혀버렸기 때문이다.

운전기사는 불만을 표했고, 나는 일단 갈 수 있는 데까지 가보기로 했다.

그러다 보니 걷는 것이 더 빠르겠다는 판단이 들었고, 목적지까지 약 10분 정도를 남겨둔 지점에서 차를 세워달라고 했다.

운전기사는 자기가 미안한 입장이긴 하다. 목적지까지 가지도 못했는데 돈을 받기 때문이다.

그래도 이번 기사는 비교적 정직한 편이었는지, 잔돈도 어느 정도 돌려주었다.

8루피정도 차이나긴 했지만, 그걸 따질 시간에 비하면 한없이 하찮은 금액이었다.

시간이 부족했기 때문에 바로 걸음을 재촉했다.

인도 거리를 이렇게 본격적으로 걸어보는 것은 사실상 처음이었다.

그런데 몇분 걷지도 않았는데 바로 소름이 돋기 시작했다.

거리의 시선들이 다 나를 향했기 때문이다.

마치 외계인이 뚝 떨어진 듯 동시에 보기 시작해서 그 눈길은 한쉬도 쉬질 않았다.

또 뒤에서 오는 릭샤들은 다 나를 향해 빵빵거렸다.

중간에 지나가며 나를 툭 치는 인간도 있었는데, 너무 불쾌해서 한 대 칠뻔했다.

걷는 내내 소름이 돋았다.

뒤에서 나는 경적 소리는 여러대가 동시에, 그것도 끊임없이 울려댔다.

하늘은 스모그로 인해 뿌옇게 흐려져 있었고, 숨 쉬는 것조차 고통스러웠다.

피부가 완전 썩어 문드러져버릴까 걱정되는 수준이었다.

그리고 이곳의 거리는 여태 가본 어떤 곳보다도 낯설고 불쾌했다.

특히 힌디어가 꼬불꼬불한게 외계에 온 느낌을 줬기 때문이다.

도로 질서고 뭐고 다 개판이었다.

행렬

어느 곳을 가던 이곳에 살면 어떤 느낌일까를 상상해보곤 한다.

그냥 간단하고 솔직히 말하면, 인도에서 태어난다면 살아가는게 너무나도 쉽지 않을 것 같다.

인도에 와서 거리를 걸어본지 수십분만에 그런 생각이 들었다.

걷다가 골목으로 들어섰는데도 상황은 다르지 않았다.

좁은 길에서도 오토바이들이 뒤에서 경적을 울리며 빠르게 지나갔다.

그들에겐 경고의 의미나, 시비의 의미나, 그 어떤 것도 중요하지는 않다.

그냥 일단 울리고 본다는 식이다.

어느순간 긴줄이 내 앞을 막아섰다.

구글지도를 보고 이동하고 있었는데, 내가 향하고 있는 판치강가가트로 향하는 경로로 줄이 늘어서있었다.

줄이 어찌나 긴지 앞으로 사람들이 움직이지도 않았고 끝도 없었다.

남녀노소 할 것없이, 모두 손에 접시를 들고 있었는데, 그 위에 꽃과 물감 같은 것이 얹혀있었다.

얼핏 봐도 강가에서 열리는 축제나 의식을 참여하러 가는 모양이었다.

걷다가 어느 한 무리의 남자들이 말을 걸고 어디가냐고 물었다.

판치강가가트를 간다고 하며 지도를 보여주니, 한 남자가 다짜고짜 그냥 따라오라고 했다.

그런데 구글지도에 나와있는 루트랑 방향이 달라서, 몇걸음 따라가다가 이건 아닌 것 같다고 판단했다.

그래서 아무말 없이 돌아섰다.

남자가 그제서야 따라와서 “뽀트! 뽀트!” 하고 외쳤다.

강가에서 보트타는 것 영업하려고 나를 데려가려했다는 것을 알아챘다.

그냥 무시하고 가다가 무리의 한 남자가 붙잡으려고 하자, 팔 내팽개치고 걍 무대뽀로 갈 길 갔다.

인도인 중 악질적인 사람은 아직 만난 적 없지만, 몇몇은 악질적이기보단 사람을 꽤 피곤하게 만드는 쪽이다.

갠지스강으로

갠지스강으로 향하는 길은 골목마다 이렇게 강에 관련된 그림이 그려져 있었다.

보는 재미가 꽤 쏠쏠했다.

여기 골목이 매우 많고 복잡해서 구글지도를 켜고 걸어도 헤매기 쉬운 구조이다.

차라리 그냥 고개를 들고 그림들을 찾다보면 자연스럽게 갠지스강을 만날 수 있다.

골목을 지나며 다시 한 번 인도에서 소가 어떤 존재인지 실감할 수 있었다.

힌두교에서 신성하게 여겨지는 동물인 만큼, 길을 걷다 마주쳐도 특별히 건드리지 않고 그대로 지나가는 것이 당연한 분위기였다.

The Route, in Short

The itinerary for this trip runs like this.

New Delhi -> Sarnath -> Varanasi -> Agra -> Jaipur -> New Delhi

Today is the day I move to Sarnath.

In planning this trip I leaned heavily on the UNESCO heritage list.

But a month would not be enough to visit every place on it.

In the end I had to choose, and simplify.

Going everywhere was beyond me in both time and money.

So: pull out the places I absolutely had to see, then prune.

Doing that produced a route centred on North India of its own accord.

India is so vast that getting anywhere eats a lot of time.

The time I had was far too short to travel the north and then carry on down to the centre or the south.

So I decided to see the north only, and that seems enough to see what is essential about India.

Going further would be greed, and I judged my body would not keep up.

These are the reasons I picked each city.

New Delhi: the capital, holding India’s modern history, where heritage like the Qutub Minar and Humayun’s Tomb sits side by side

Sarnath: where the Buddha actually first taught, one of the four great Buddhist sites

Varanasi: the Hindu holy city where you can see the Ganges

Agra: capital during the Mughal period, home of India’s landmark, the Taj Mahal

Jaipur: the city called the ‘Pink City’, capital of Rajasthan, holding Amber Fort

Morning

I got up at 6:50 today.

One of the hardest things about travelling is getting up early.

At the moment of waking it feels like commuting to work on a holiday.

By the time I had showered and got ready to go out it was already half past seven.

Looking down from the rooftop the neighbourhood was still steeped in smog, but there was still a little of that freshness particular to morning.

From the rooftop I could see small children heading to school.

Trudging off to school from primary age seems to be much the same everywhere in the world.

Stepping out of the hostel I saw more children on their way to school, and the innocence coming off them was endearing and warm.

While waiting for the Uber I took photos of the neighbourhood.

Houses with no walls or no windows made an impression.

At first I wondered whether they had been left unfinished.

But that is not necessarily it — many of the buildings seem to have been deliberately built that way from the start.

The Uber arrived three minutes after I called it.

To find out just how much the horns go off on the way, I shot a ten-second video.

I had assumed once a second, but with them going off in several places at once it felt like four or five times a second.

To Varanasi

After about thirty minutes we reached New Delhi airport at half past eight.

When I went to pay I still could not register a card in the app, so again I had to pay cash.

I had two 20-rupee notes and four 100s, and the fare was 313 rupees. In the end I had no choice but to pay 320.

I watched to see whether the driver would give me change, but again he hedged, pretended he had none in his wallet, and just kept pouring out Hindi.

I knew 7 rupees is next to nothing in Korean money, and grudging the time more, I let it go as a tip.

I need to register the Travel Wallet card on Uber, but Uber keeps blocking it.

The airport staff were all in military uniform.

From the baggage check to the gate took less than twenty minutes.

I went looking for drinking water first and bought water and a coffee at Costa Coffee.

In India even the water you buy needs care.

There is a chance unclean water was used.

Having to pick out only safe water to drink is quite tiring.

The day before I forgot to buy water and went to sleep without a single mouthful.

I also could not take the malaria tablets I had prepared, for want of water; at last I could.

I took the chance to use the toilet somewhere clean, too.

Indian toilets were unexpectedly quite clean.

The cleaners kept watching for people to leave and came in to wipe roughly once a minute.

It made me wonder why they clean this hard.

It may be because an airport is a special sort of facility.

At the very least, I decided you should always use the toilet at the airport.

We had to take a bus out to the plane.

Getting off the bus, a young Indian man asked where I was from and said “Nice to meet you.”

India also has plenty of cheerful, easy-going people like this.

I saw almost no Koreans; the East Asians I had seen so far were mostly Japanese.

On my plane there was a slight Japanese man who seemed to be travelling alone, and two groups of Japanese women travelling with friends.

Varanasi airport was supposed to be about an hour away.

The schedule was to take off at eleven and land at twelve, but we left at twelve, so we landed an hour late too.

The shampoo had burst inside the small bag holding my shower things.

I wrapped the bag in the zip-lock sick bag from the seat pocket and put it in the big bag, but it felt like a time bomb that could leak at any moment.

That day I had a sleeping bus to catch, so there was no showering and no laundry on the schedule, and if the whole bag got soaked in shampoo I would be, literally, screwed.

What worried me most that day was whether I would manage to catch the bus I had booked through 12Go.

I had read a lot of reviews saying buses booked through this platform are vague about where you board, that the location changes often, that they are hard to reach, and that delays are frequent.

It was close to a savaging, but there was no alternative, so I had to book there.

The moment I landed in Varanasi and got off the plane I took off the long sleeves and changed the long trousers for shorts.

I wiped down the burst wash bag and separated the leaked items into the zip-lock bag I had taken from the cabin.

I got an Uber as soon as I stepped out of the airport around one.

But then the driver asked me for 50 rupees, saying it was for airport parking.

He kept trying to push it onto me, saying he had no money, but I held out that I had no cash. And in fact I had no 50-rupee note.

I was due to pay 650 for the Uber fare anyway, and I knew this man was not going to give up 650 rupees over 50.

In the end he settled it himself with the man collecting the parking fee and we drove out.

The two of them have probably run this arrangement on tourists dozens of times.

The Begging Boy

From the moment the taxi was stopped, a bright-eyed boy of about seven had been watching me pitifully.

When I got out of the car he tapped at my arm, put out his hand and started begging straight away.

He would put on a sad face and then break into a bright smile, and he kept following along beside me.

The ticket had to be paid by QR code, and the internet barely worked.

I got as far as the payment screen somehow, but in the end it failed.

Online was about 270 rupees; buying with cash on the spot was 300.

I could not be bothered, so I just paid 300 and bought it there.

Only when I stepped through the entrance to the site did the boy fall away.

The boy who would not come off even when I met his eyes and laughed and played along gave up in the end, once he could not follow me inside.

He had stuck to me for roughly ten or fifteen minutes.

If you hand money to a begging child easily, that child may go on living off begging.

I thought that a structure where you make your living off tourists’ pity cannot be a good way for anyone, however young.

What is not on is not on.

Into the Deer Park

The moment I entered the ruins a man attached himself to me, asking whether I needed a guide.

I declined politely — no thank you.

At which he said “No problem” and withdrew courteously.

There are guides as polite as that.

The Ashoka Pillar

A little further in, two monks sat under a large tree, and several Indians in what looked like white priestly robes were receiving teaching in front of them.

Further in still I saw middle-aged travellers carrying a Korean flag.

That was the first time I had seen Korean travellers here.

What you are looking at is the Ashoka pillar.

It is a pillar raised in the third century BC by Ashoka the Great.

More than thirty or so were raised across India, for the purpose of spreading Buddhism and proclaiming the ideology of his rule.

The Sarnath pillar matters especially, because this is where the Buddha gave his first sermon.

Originally the top of the pillar carried a sculpture of four lions — the Lion Capital of Sarnath.

That lion capital is now used as India’s state emblem.

Let me lay out a little more about the Maurya Empire and Ashoka the Great here.

The Maurya Empire was founded around 322 BC by Chandragupta Maurya.

At its founding, the Nanda Empire held the east of North India as the dominant power.

And in the west, the Macedonian army of the famous Alexander III — Alexander the Great — was on campaign.

After the long campaign Alexander turned back, and Chandragupta destroyed the Nanda Empire and unified India.

It was the first empire in Indian history to unify India — think of it as India’s equivalent of Qin, the first to unify China.

And within that Maurya Empire, the king who ruled at its height was Ashoka the Great.

Ashoka was Chandragupta’s grandson and the third king of the Maurya Empire.

He was famous for cruelty.

There is an account that in the fight over succession he killed 99 half-brothers, sparing only his full brother, and killed all the officials and court women who had followed them.

And that he killed hundreds even among those who had helped him to the throne, in the name of testing their loyalty.

Once, they say, he had a woman given 500 lashes for picking flowers from a tree he was fond of.

He also built a torture palace known as ‘Ashoka’s Hell’, where he had prisoners tortured.

What changed Ashoka was the invasion of the kingdom of Kalinga, in the eighth year of his reign.

In that war, they say, 100,000 died and 150,000 were taken prisoner.

After the fighting, the accounts say the blood came up to the ankles, and that children were orphaned or driven mad.

Only then was he shaken, and out of guilt he converted to Buddhism.

Repented awfully quickly, that one. Might have thought of it earlier…

In any case, what he did after converting to Buddhism was positive.

He stopped the wars, funded public works, and built hospitals, orphanages and homes for the old so that people would be treated and cared for.

And he brought in animal protection policies, limits on the killing of animals, even medical care for animals.

He raised stupas and sent monks into neighbouring countries to spread the teaching.

He was tolerant not only of Buddhism but of other religions too.

Perhaps because the place has such deep history, the trees too were huge and dense, as though they had aged along with it.

The Dhamek Stupa

The site is so old that much of it has collapsed into bare foundations, so at first glance it does feel a little empty.

In the end the highlight here was the Dhamek Stupa.

It was far bigger than I expected, and facing it in person it was genuinely imposing.

Up close it was certainly worth seeing, with a heavy presence to it.

Shade fell behind it, and a fair number of people had gathered there to rest or to look.

Only, given that this is the actual place where the Buddha is said to have taught, the kind of sanctity or atmosphere I had expected felt somewhat lacking.

That does not mean I was disappointed.

I had not come expecting to feel that in the first place, and setting that standard aside it was a perfectly good place.

Yoga Experience? Meditation Experience?

Off to one side, foreigners in clothes of various colours were gathered learning to meditate, and people meditating quietly alone stood out too.

But with smog thick on every side, honestly, the romantic atmosphere I had expected did not amount to much.

They are probably travellers staying in Varanasi for a few days and taking in programmes like this as well.

Coming all this way and trying something like that seemed no bad thing.

It would certainly make for a memorable, particular experience.

On another note, there was something I felt while looking around here.

With a site this important to the world in its hands, I found myself thinking that India is not making enough of its value, for want of upkeep.

Even romance, in the end, only holds up when present-day upkeep and preservation are behind it.

Among the sites that will stand in human history, like Babylon or Assyria, there are those that have been destroyed and lost to extremist armed groups.

And even if you took the risk and went to those places, I doubt you could feel the emotion and the atmosphere people had imagined.

Going to the actual place is plainly different from learning it from a book or the internet.

Feeling the breath of the past, and seeing with your own eyes what has changed and how as time has passed, stays with you a long time.

Which is why it is all the more of a shame to watch such places lose their appeal to neglect or to practical problems.

All the more so for someone who likes history and likes travel he can experience directly.

A Pity, But...

The boy who begged earlier was mild by comparison.

The one who came begging this time was holding a small child, and I could not tell whether it was asleep or dead. It gave me a shock.

The moment I saw the child in his arms my skin went cold all over.

It is a harsh way to put it, but the child really did look dead.

I put a hand to its nose, and it was not so.

It shook me badly.

In fact, before coming to India I had read about begging children and looked things up.

Many children do not go to school at all and live by begging.

Because that earns more money right now.

There are real cases of families pushing them out onto the street to do it.

So even when relief organisations like NGOs put out a hand, the children beg instead of going to school.

And it is not only families — in many cases thugs put them up to it, and there were accounts that the thugs collect most of what is earned.

I cannot know what is true and how far, but I think handing over money as it is does not break the cycle of a bad practice; it hardens it.

This was not a problem to be solved simply, out of a moment’s pity.

The shock was heavy and my resolve weakened, and it was not easy to move my feet, but I turned my head away and walked straight on.

There is a place called the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara too, but I did not go inside — I only looked from outside.

The Streets of Varanasi

The taxi I took from the vihara could barely move forward.

The destination was Panchganga Ghat, but as we went on, more and more vehicles piled in and the road blocked completely.

The driver made his displeasure clear, and I decided to go as far as we could for now.

Doing that, I came to the judgement that walking would be faster, and asked him to stop about ten minutes short of the destination.

The driver is in the apologetic position, in a way. He is taking money without having got me there.

Even so, this driver seemed relatively honest, and he gave back a reasonable amount of change.

It came out about 8 rupees short, but against the time it would take to argue, the sum was beneath trivial.

I was short on time, so I pressed straight on.

It was effectively my first time walking the streets of India in earnest.

And within a few minutes of walking my skin started to crawl.

Because every gaze on the street was on me.

They all started looking at once, as though an alien had dropped in, and that gaze did not let up for a second.

The rickshaws coming up behind all honked at me.

One man knocked into me as he passed, and it was so unpleasant I nearly hit him.

My skin crawled the whole way.

The horns behind me went off several at a time, and without pause.

The sky was clouded white with smog, and even breathing was painful.

It was at the level where I worried my skin would rot right through.

And the streets here were stranger and more unpleasant than anywhere I have been.

Partly because the winding shapes of Hindi gave the feeling of having arrived somewhere alien.

Road discipline, order, all of it — a complete shambles.

The Procession

Wherever I go I tend to imagine what it would feel like to live there.

Simply and honestly: if I had been born in India, living would not be easy at all.

That came to me within tens of minutes of walking the streets in India.

Turning off into an alley as I walked changed nothing.

Even in the narrow lanes, motorbikes came up fast behind, sounding their horns.

To them the meaning of it — warning, or picking a fight — does not matter at all.

The approach is simply to sound it first and see.

At some point a long queue blocked my way.

I was walking by Google Maps, and the queue was strung out along the route toward Panchganga Ghat, where I was headed.

The queue was so long that people were not moving forward at all, and it had no end.

Men and women, old and young alike, all held a dish in their hands, with flowers and something like pigment laid on top.

Even at a glance they seemed to be on their way to a festival or a rite held at the river.

As I walked, a group of men spoke to me and asked where I was going.

I said Panchganga Ghat and showed them the map, at which one man told me flatly to just follow him.

But the direction differed from the route on Google Maps, so after a few steps I judged this was not right.

So I turned around without a word.

Only then did the man follow, shouting “Boat! Boat!”

I realised he had been taking me off to sell me a boat ride on the river.

I ignored him and walked on, and when one of the group tried to grab me I threw the arm off and just barrelled on my way.

I have yet to meet a genuinely vicious Indian, but some of them are less vicious than the sort who wear you out.

To the Ganges

On the way to the Ganges, every alley had paintings to do with the river like this on the walls.

They were quite good fun to look at.

There are so many alleys here, and they are so tangled, that it is easy to get lost even walking with Google Maps open.

You are better off just lifting your head and looking for the paintings — follow them and you will meet the Ganges naturally.

Passing through the alleys, I understood once again what cows are in India.

Being an animal held sacred in Hinduism, the atmosphere took it for granted that you meet one on the road, leave it well alone, and walk on past.
